Cast Iron Shell Core
At Smoky Mountain Machining, Inc. careful planning and flexibility are both key to our success. This oil cooler shell core family of products, used in a diesel engine application, consists of machined castings measuring from 4 x 7 x 4 inches up to 9 x 18 x 9 inches and weighing from 4 to 30 pounds. All sizes have a similar configuration consisting of parallel machined faces and a large through bore.
In order to meet the demands of the customers fast-turnaround schedule, we fixtured the units so that the bores can be machined on a turning center or milling center, depending on equipment availability. By building flexibility this into the manufacturing process, we can guarantee that each of the 5,000 pieces a year we manufacture for this customer will be delivered on time, without impacting other jobs in progress.
